Metric Modulator

VST3 plugin for your DAW

Put the beat grid on an instrument track. Design the pattern in the companion app, hear it from your DAW in time with the session, and play along on your MIDI kit to see where every hit landed.

Coming soon for macOS

An instrument track

The plugin plays the pattern with the app's own drum kit, sample-accurate to the DAW's clock, and sends it out as MIDI for any instrument you like.

The full editor

The companion app opens from the plugin: tracks, measures, metres and divisions as on your phone. Each plugin instance keeps its own beat in the project.

Scored on your kit

Route your e-kit's MIDI to the track and every hit is judged against the pattern, stamped to the sample by the DAW.

Drives the session

Over Ableton Link the app starts and stops the DAW and sets its tempo — so a tempo ramp climbs the whole session, pass by pass.

Part of Pro

The VST3 plugin comes with Metric Modulator Pro, the one-time upgrade in the iPhone and Android app.

Setting up

  1. Run the installer. It puts the plugin in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and the Metric Modulator app in Applications, for every account on the Mac.
  2. Rescan plug-ins. In Ableton Live: Settings › Plug-Ins, turn on Use VST3 Plug-In System Folders, then Rescan. Metric Modulator is under PlusZero.
  3. Add it to a MIDI track and open its window; Open Metric Modulator starts the app.
  4. Let the app drive Live (optional): Settings › Link, Tempo & MIDI, turn on Link and Start Stop Sync.
